History of the RingtoneHistory of the RingtoneIf you work in an office, shop at the mall, or attend school, chances are you've heard someone's Ringtone. Ringtones are one of the easiest ways you can transform your cellular phone from that standard off the shelf product into a uniquely personalized piece of electronics.
The history of the Ringtone, like the origin of the faceplate, lies in Finland. Add2phone started selling Ringtones, which customers could download to their phones for at a minimal cost, about $1-$3 each. Boost Mobile a division of Nextel, was one of the first players to realize the potential of the emerging market. These phones came preloaded with up to 500 different pop-music songs. Motorola and MTV music then formed a partnership. They developed a distribution mechanism that packaged wallpapers, screen savers, and colors (known as themes) with songs, together in one package, that was easy to download to your cellular phone. One of the key factors of the products success was the increased sophistication of the quality of the sound. Motorola developed a way to deliver that actual artist's recordings into the phone, this technology was known as MotoMixer.Five years ago this was a non existent market, in 2004 it is estimated to be over $3 billion. The market is projected to grow between 20-30% for the next 3 to 5 years. Eventually the novelty of the market will wear off, and sales will slow. However as a technology continues to advance it may change into new forms. Many phones can now take pictures and high end phones in Japan are beginning to take streaming video. Eventually these two technologies will merge allowing you to have mini movies on your phone.
